SMART helps Royal Malaysian Police train to 21st-century standards

Nationwide training program adopts SMART Board interactive whiteboards

CALGARY, Alberta --- July 25, 2007 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces that the Royal Malaysian Police has selected the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard for their new ICT (information and communications technology) training labs. To date, 20 SMART Board interactive whiteboards have been installed in police training academies across the country. As police reports, training and communication are becoming increasingly computer based, Malaysian authorities recognize the need for police officers to become IT proficient. The SMART Board interactive whiteboard was chosen for the training labs because it enables trainers to present interactive lessons and engage learners. Initial feedback from the trainers indicates that the use of SMART Board interactive whiteboards has helped trainees comprehend and retain information.

Using the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, trainers can demonstrate the step-by-step process of filing a police report interactively. Trainees are able to follow along in real time from their desktop computers. Trainers can access and control any computer application or multimedia platform, such as the Internet, CDs and DVDs, simply by touching the screen or by using a mouse. SMART Board software, enables them to write over programs or lesson plans in digital ink, then edit, save, print or post their notes to a website. They also use the interactive whiteboard’s built-in recording function to record lessons for future training sessions. The police academy training labs are located in Cheras, Pulapol Kuala Lumpur, Pulapol Kuala Kubu Baharu, Pulapol Muar, Pulapol Kuching, Pulapol Kota Kinabalu, Pulapol Ayer Hitam, Marine Police Training Centre in Tumpat and the Northern Zone Training Centre, Perak.

“With communication and processes becoming increasingly digital, we recognize the need to provide trainees with ICT skills and police reporting systems training,” says Pozlan Bin Haji Ibrahim, Assistant Superintendent of Police. “The installation of SMART Board interactive whiteboards in the training labs has enabled us to provide an innovative hands-on training program for our cadets.”

“The adoption of SMART Board interactive whiteboards in emergency services environments is accelerating on a global scale, as agencies discover the value of interactive technology for training and day-to-day operations,” says Nancy Knowlton, SMART’s CEO. “The decision by the Royal Malaysian Police to adopt SMART products into their training programs demonstrates their commitment to developing a world-class police academy that prepares their officers for law enforcement in the 21st century.”
