International symposium explores role of ICT in 21st-century learning

SMART CEO among key speakers as key education organizations gather in Rome

CALGARY, Alberta --- June 9, 2009 --- SMART Technologies announces its participation in the ICT in Education Networks International Symposium on June 11–12 in Rome, Italy. More than 130 high-level delegates, including representatives of 32 ministries of education and education agencies, are attending the conference. The event is designed to build a common future for education, encourage networking within the global ICT in education community and reflect on the nature of 21st-century learning. SMART’s CEO, Nancy Knowlton, is participating in a roundtable discussion entitled A Vision for the Future. Other topics for discussion include creating compelling learning environments, supporting professional development of teachers and the importance of technology in education at a time of global financial downturn.

Four major education organizations have come together to the stage the event – European Schoolnet (EUN), a network of ministries of education in Europe; the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) in the United States; Education.au, the Australian national agency for ICT in education; and ANSAS, the Italian agency for innovation in education. According to organizers, the symposium marks the first time an event of this size has brought together key international decision-makers and educators to share ideas on the future of ICT in education. Participants are coming from 6 continents, representing 30 countries. SMART is one of the key supporters of the event.
