SMART Board(TM) Software for UNIX(R)/Linux(R) Operating Systems --------------------------------------------------------------- This release of SMART Board software supports SMART Board interactive whiteboards, Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboards, SMART Board for Flat Panel Displays interactive overlays, and Sympodium(TM) interactive lecterns. SMART Board software includes: 1. SMART Board software service, the driver component of the software 2. SMART Board tools, which include Notebook(TM) software (an application for creating and organizing annotations), Floating Tools, Screen Capture and SMART Keyboard. NOTE: For the install and uninstall procedures below, the refers to the directory you specify when you install the software. By default, this is /usr/bin. Also, the is the name of your current account shell, such as BASH, C-Shell, etc. Installing the Software ----------------------- 1) Download the install package from the SMART Technologies Inc. Web site. 2) Log in as root (or 'su') and launch the installer: sh ./Linux_SMART_Board_Software.bin OR sh ./SGI_IRIX_SMART_Board_Software.bin OR sh ./Solaris_SPARC_SMART_Board_Software.bin OR sh ./SOlaris_Intel_SMART_Board_Software.bin OR sh ./IBM_AIX_SMART_Board_Software.bin 3) Follow the on-screen instructions. 4) At the end of the installation, you must set the PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH and XFILESEARCHPATH variables. Do this by copying the contents of /SMARTBoard/scripts/SetPaths_ to the appropriate file in your home directory (i.e. .bashrc or .cshrc). 5) Log out and then log back in. For SGI systems, when you copy over the script commands, you can disregard the lines for the XFILESEARCHPATH variable or comment them out using the # symbol. Uninstalling the Software ------------------------- 1) Log in as root. 2) Run the following command: /SMARTBoard/UnistallerData/Uninstall_SMARTBoard 3) Follow the on-screen instructions. Starting the Software --------------------- Run the SMART Board driver (the service) by typing the following command in a terminal: SMARTService & New Features ------------ SMART Board software supports both Projected (Mouse Mode) and Non-Projected (Whiteboard Mode) operation, and screen captures of a full screen or a specific area of the screen. Notebook software and the SMART Keyboard are available for UNIX and Linux operating systems. Support for the SMART USB adapter cable is available on Solaris SPARC systems. There is a Sun USB module that the SMART Board Service needs to communicate with the SMART USB cable. It is not by default included with the current version of Solaris, either for Intel or SPARC platforms.. To use the SMART USB cable, customers using SOlaris must either: A) Upgrade to SOlaris 9, Update 6, 4/04 or later OR B) Install the USB DDK from http://developers.sun.com/solaris/developer/support/driver/usb.html. NOTES: - You may need to install the lastest patches before installing the DDK. See the documentation that comes with the DDK. - These solutions don't apply to SunRay devices. Known Issues ------------ Fedora Core 1 and Higher, Newer Red Hat Enterprise Systems and SUSE 9.1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In Fedora Core 1 and higher, newer Red Hat Enterprise systems and SUSE 9.1, Red Hat and SUSE have severely limited support for the Java 1.3.1 environment. Our current install does not currently support these setups. AIX(R) Systems -------------- When connecting to a Rear Projection SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboard or a SMART Board for Flat Panel Displays interactive overlay that uses Digital Vision Touch (DViT(TM)) technology, you must unplug the hardware and then plug it back in. This resets the power to the system. We recommend that you always use the Screen Capture button on the SMART Board tools to take screen captures. Although you can also take a screen capture by pressing and holding anywhere on the screen, this only works the first time you take a screen capture. If you try to take a second screen capture using this method, all screen captures will be disabled. Linux Systems ------------- When running the installation program, Notebook software, or the SMART Board Control Panel, you might see several warning messages that say "Cannot convert string ... to type VirtualBinding". To avoid these messages, enter the following text in the .motifbind file in your home directory: osfCancel :Escape Conversely, you can run the SetMotifBind script in the $SBOARD_INSTALL_PATH/scripts/ directory. Depending on the memory of the computer's video card, you may experience a lag when you annotate. To alleviate this lag, try decreasing the video resolution. If the video card has 4 MB of memory, the maximum recommended resolution is 800 x 600 at 24-bit depth, and 1024 x 768 resolution at both 16- and 8-bit depth. Because Mandrake software version 9.1 has a newer Xaw3d library, to use SMART Board software with this Linux distribution, you must log in as root and type the following in a terminal: ln -s /libXaw3d.so.7 /libXaw3d.so.6 (where is the library directory where libXaw3d.so.7 is located). For SuSE software, you must log into the desktop as root (and not as a normal user) to install or uninstall the software. SGI Computers ------------- You will need to modify the serial cable in order to connect to the interactive product. Visit www.smarttech.com/support/software/soft_unix2.asp for detailed instructions. If any text in Notebook software or the SMART Board Control Panel is too big for the allotted space, run the SetJavaSmallFonts script in the $SBOARD_INSTALL_PATH/scripts/ directory. On some systems, the buttons on the pen tray of the interactive product may be reversed from the description in the Pen Tray tab of the Control Panel: the Top/Right button will actually be the Bottom/Left button and vice versa. Solaris(TM) for Intel(R) Systems ------------------------- Transparent annotations will appear as the wrong colors when annotating on the interactive screen. All Operating Systems --------------------- When you're at the interactive screen, erase annotations in Notebook software slowly. You can use the eraser to erase shapes made on the interactive screen, but not those made in Notebook software. Only the CTRL + F1, CTRL + F2, and CTRL + F3 shortcut keys will work when Notebook software is in full screen view. When you take a screen capture of shapes and annotations, they are inserted into Notebook software as a single object. The Restore Annotations button on the Floating Tools restores both the annotations and the screen background. The Floating Tools Configuration dialog box may flicker if it overlaps the Floating Tools palette. To remedy this, move the dialog box. If you're using multiple displays, you can only annotate on one display at a time. If simultaneous annotations are made with the mouse and a pen tray stylus when using multiple displays, annotation spikes will appear. To access the online Help, set the BROWSER environment variable to your Web browser application. If your Unix operating system does not support the GIF graphic format, some of the bitmaps in the online Help may not be displayed. To remedy this, change your operating system settings to support this graphic format. Before you take a screen capture, make sure that the Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock keyboard functions are not activated. Also, do not press any keys on the keyboard while taking a screen capture. If you change operating systems, reset the power to the interactive product.
