SMART Notebook™ App for iPad Now Available

CALGARY, Alberta --- September 4, 2012 --- The much anticipated SMART Notebook app for iPad is now available on the Apple app store. The app allows students to use SMART Notebook™ collaborative learning software on their personal or school-owned iPad enabling a seamless transition between whole-class, small-group and personalized learning. SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA), a leading provider of collaboration solutions, recognized the need for the app in allowing students and teachers with iPads to enjoy the engaging lesson materials of SMART Notebook software anywhere and at anytime.

SMART Notebook software is the ideal choice for lesson creation and delivery, as demonstrated by more than 6 million activations and use in classrooms with over 40 million students in 175 countries. A recent global study involving more than 300 educators from around the world revealed that using both interactive whiteboards and personal devices such as iPads, tablets or PCs in the classroom provides more value than using either on their own because it enhances the ability to shift easily between whole-class, small group and individual learning. Educators also indicated that interactive whiteboards can drive more value than PCs or tablets alone. With the SMART Notebook app on their iPad, students can use many of the software tools typically used on the SMART Board® interactive whiteboard. They can open any SMART Notebook file from an e-mail or file-sharing website and can write, erase, add text, move objects and insert images. Additionally, students can use the iPad camera roll and can drop images into SMART Notebook software pages. These features will enable students to use their iPad to review material and complete activities that can then be saved and e-mailed back to the teacher for evaluation. Student material can also be displayed on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard for whole-class learning by wirelessly streaming the iPad content using AirPlay with an Apple TV. By using the SMART Notebook app for iPad, students and teachers can stay on track and save time by being able to work with the same material on both interactive displays and iPad at school or at home. For more information go to SMART Notebook for iPad.

"SMART Notebook continues to be the software of choice for educators looking to add interactivity into their daily lessons," says Linda Thomas, Vice President, Products, SMART Technologies. "The SMART Notebook app for iPad allows students and teachers to benefit from many of the features of SMART Notebook software wherever they go, enabling learning and engagement that goes beyond the classroom."

SMART Announces Cost Reductions

  • Reduction of cash operating expenses by approximately 10%
  • Establishing a sustainable cost structure that supports future growth opportunities

CALGARY, Alberta --- August 29, 2012 --- SMART Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: SMT) (TSX: SMA), a leading provider of collaboration solutions, today announced the implementation of additional cost reduction measures, affirming its commitment to improving operating efficiencies. Through a combination of decreases in discretionary spending and workforce reductions, the company will reduce annual cash operating expenses by approximately 10%, from fiscal 2012 levels. The scope and timing of the expected cost reductions are the result of ongoing comprehensive operational assessments and are expected to lead to further one-time charges of approximately $5.0 million during fiscal 2013, not including the one-time costs associated with the strategy and business process reviews.

"These actions are aligned with our focus on managing SMART's cost structure and improving overall operating efficiency to adjust to the challenging education market in North America and Europe," stated Tom Hodson, Interim President and CEO of SMART. "We expect the cost reductions to result in annual run rate cash operating expenses of approximately $200 million during our third quarter, down approximately 10% using fiscal 2012 as our baseline. Looking forward, SMART remains committed to product innovation for profitable growth segments including our business segment and the underpenetrated markets in education. We believe that building a sustainable cost structure that is appropriately scaled to revenue will strengthen SMART's platform for growth longer-term."

Global Research Finds Personal Devices Add More Value When Used With Interactive Whiteboards Than When Used Alone

Study also shows value of instructional technology increases with training, content and support

CALGARY, Alberta --- August 16, 2012 --- A research study involving more than 300 educators from around the world reveals that using both interactive whiteboards and personal devices such as tablets or PCs in the classroom provides more value than using either on their own because it enhances the ability to shift easily between whole-class, small group and individual learning. Educators additionally indicated that interactive whiteboards can drive more value than PCs or tablets alone. The survey also found that instructional technology works most effectively when it is combined with teacher training, high-quality digital content and implementation best practices. The study was conducted by Filigree Consulting, an independent consulting firm specializing in technology research, on behalf of SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA), a leading provider of collaboration solutions. According to the study results, 70 percent of the educators who had a high-level of collaborative learning adoption combined with best practices reported receiving above average returns on their technology investment, including gains in student achievement. By contrast, nearly half of the educators who had implemented instructional technology without a developed strategy reported below average returns.

Administrators, teachers and IT specialists from North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, India and Asia, encompassing a range of school and jurisdiction sizes, participated in the research. The results of the study have been published in a white paper entitled Instructional Technology and Collaborative Learning Best Practices: Global Report and Recommendations. It concludes that while the best value from technology adoption comes from those who implement a variety of instructional technology tools and focus on best practices, only 20 percent of those surveyed had achieved this level of maturity. Participants who followed this approach reported up to three times greater results than those at a lower level of collaboration maturity on outcomes such as:

  • Ability to test and implement new teaching models
  • Tangible gain in student achievement
  • Student engagement as measured by decrease in absenteeism and decrease in discipline referrals
  • Retaining and recruiting quality teachers
  • Teacher efficiency and effectiveness
  • Improved student experience

"It takes more than technology to transform classrooms into collaborative learning environments," says Jeff Lowe, Vice President, Marketing, SMART Technologies. "This research clearly shows that a comprehensive instructional technology solution, supported by a strategy that includes professional development, digital content and a strong implementation plan delivers the greatest value from technology and enables improved student outcomes."

Based on the survey, an assessment tool has been created allowing teachers and administrators to determine the value derived from their instructional technology and key areas to work on in order to move to the next level of maturity. The assessment tool consists of an online survey that can be taken by any member of an organization. The survey will then produce comparative results based on education best practices and offer recommendations on how to implement further initiatives to achieve better outcomes and reach a higher level of maturity related to technology investments. For more information, and to take the assessment survey, visit smarttech.com/educationassessment.
