The TEA program recognizes the outstanding contribution of teachers who have made a significant impact on their students, schools and communities. In recognition of their exceptional effort, recipients are rewarded with leading-edge technology products to help improve student learning outcomes in their school. 2012Show

U.S. State and National Teacher of the Year

Each 2012 US Teacher of the Year received a TEA Technology Classroom consisting of:

  • SMART Board 880i5 interactive whiteboard system or SMART Response PE, SMART Document Camera and SMART Slate
  • SMART Ideas concept-mapping software
  • SMART Bridgit conferencing software
  • SMART Notebook Math Tools software
  • SMART Classroom Suite software (including SMART Notebook, SMART Sync , SMART Notebook Student Edition and SMART Response CE)

During a ceremony at the White House on April 23, 2012, President Barack Obama presented the 2012 National Teacher of the Year award to Rebecca Mieliwocki, a 7th grade English teacher from Luther Burbank High School in California. For more information on Rebecca Mieliwocki, click here.

2012 Innovative Use of Technology Award

SMART also sponsored the Innovative Use of Technology awards in Alberta, Canada. Three teachers in Alberta were recognized with TEA technology classrooms and 20 additional finalists received SMART software awards.

2011 Innovative Use of Technology Award

SMART also sponsored the Innovative Use of Technology awards in Alberta, Canada. Dan Grassick of Rideau Park School, Lori Hogue of William Aberhart High School, and Sarah Rogers of Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School were recognized with TEA technology classrooms.

MACUL Outstanding Educator

The Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) Outstanding Educator of the Year and Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards was sponsored by SMART. Tasha Candela of Lake Shore High School is the Outstanding Educator of the Year and Lori Wetzel of Richards Middle School was the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Both received TEA technology classrooms.

Kirk Villanueva of Our Lady of the Assumption Elementary & Junior High School in Calgary, Jennifer Deyenberg of Dorothy Dalgliesh School in Picture Butte and Lisa Beebe of Queen Elizabeth School in Edmonton were recognized with TEA technology classrooms.

MACUL Outstanding Educator

The Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) Outstanding Educator of the Year and Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards was sponsored by SMART. Janine Lim of Berrien RESA in Berrien Springs was the Outstanding Educator of the Year and Megan Whitmore of Chormann Elementary in Southgate was the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Both received TEA technology classrooms.

Trenton Lunde of Grand Centre Elementary School in Cold Lake, Joshua Timothy Hill of Langdon School in Landon and Sherri-Lynn Fricker of Fort Saskatchewan Elementary School in Fort Saskatchewan were recognized with TEA technology classrooms.

MACUL Outstanding Educator

The Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) Outstanding Educator of the Year and Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards was sponsored by SMART. Elizabeth Allen of L’Anse Creuse Public Schools in Harrison Township was the Outstanding Educator of the Year and Andy Losik of Hamilton Community Schools in Hamilton was the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Both received TEA technology classrooms.

The Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) Outstanding Educator of the Year and Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards was sponsored by SMART. Wendy Nowak of Southgate Community Schools in Southgate was the Outstanding Educator of the Year and Marilyn Western of McGuire Elementary in Mt. Pleasant was the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Karen Mosier of Allendale Public Schools in Allendale was the Outstanding Educator of the Year and Carol Colburn of Highlander Way Middle School in Howell was the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
