At SMART Technologies, we believe every young person deserves a chance to thrive, especially those who take on extraordinary responsibilities at a young age. That’s why we were honored to contribute to BBC's Children in Need Interior Design Masters programme, an initiative dedicated to transforming spaces to better serve children and young people across the UK.
In a recent episode that aired on 12 November, viewers witnessed a remarkable makeover at the Sandwell Young Carers Centre, a charity offering vital support for young people who care for family members. As part of this transformation, we proudly donated a SMART Board GX series interactive display, a tool that has already begun to enrich the lives of these deserving young carers.
A space filled with new possibilities
For the young carers at Sandwell, life is a delicate balancing act between managing caregiving duties and pursuing their own education and personal growth. The newly renovated space provides a safe haven where they can connect, learn, and express themselves.
The GX interactive display has become more than just a piece of technology – it’s a platform for opportunity. It brings interactive workshops to life, turning group learning into inclusive, dynamic experiences. It inspires creativity through collaborative activities, offering young carers a chance to explore self-expression and teamwork in ways that weren’t possible before.
One young carer shared how the updated space feels like “a breath of fresh air”, giving them a place to step away from their responsibilities and simply be a young person again.
Supporting meaningful interactions with technology
This project reminded us of the profound impact that thoughtful design and technology can have when paired with a mission to uplift others. The design team at Children In Need understood that this space transformation was more than just asthetics – their approach was creating an environment where young carers can dream bigger, feel connected, and have access to resources that enable them to thrive both academically and emotionally.
At Sandwell Young Carers, the SMART display acts as a symbol of investment in these young people’s futures. It shows them they are seen, valued, and supported.
Together, we create brighter futures
Reflecting on this story, we’re reminded of the power of community and collaboration. By combining innovative technology with compassionate design, we can create spaces that change lives.
We’re grateful to have played a part in this journey and encourage everyone to watch the episode and celebrate the resilience and courage of young carers across the UK.
