Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the SMART HDMI Cable compatible with all SMART Board models?
Yes. The SMART HDMI Cable has been tested and certified by SMART to work with all SMART interactive displays that have an HDMI connector. It has been specifically validated against SMART's current display lineup, including the MX-V5, MX-V5 Plus, RX-V1, GX-V4N, GX-V4G, GX-V3, and SMART Board Mini. As an HDMI 2.1 cable, it is also backward-compatible with displays featuring HDMI 2.0 ports and earlier.
  • What does "Ultra High Speed HDMI Certified" mean, and why does it matter?
Ultra High Speed HDMI Certified means the cable has been formally tested and certified under the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Certification Program administered by HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA). This is a certification program that independently verifies the cable meets the full HDMI 2.1 specification including 48Gbps bandwidth, 8K@60Hz, 4K@144Hz, eARC, and low EMI standards. Many cables may claim these specifications without independent verification. The SMART HDMI cable has been formally certified.
  • What is a Plenum-rated cable and do I need one?
Plenum-rated (CMP) cables are built with fire-resistant materials approved for use in plenum spaces (the air circulation areas of a building), such as above drop ceilings and inside HVAC ducts. In most commercial and educational buildings, fire codes require any cable run through these spaces to carry a Plenum rating. If your installation involves routing cables through walls or ceilings, the SMART HDMI Cable meets that requirement.
  • Why does the cable use Active Optical Cable (AOC) technology?
At 10 metres / 33 feet, standard passive copper cables cannot reliably maintain 48Gbps signal integrity. The SMART HDMI cable uses hybrid fiber and copper conductors, fiber carries the high-bandwidth signal over distance without degradation, while copper handles power delivery. The result is certified full-spec HDMI 2.1 performance at a length where most passive cables fall short. No external power supply is required; the cable is bus-powered directly from the connected source.
  • Is the SMART HDMI cable directional?
Yes. The SMART HDMI cable is a directional cable. The Source end must be connected to your playback device and the Display end to your screen. Reversing the connection will result in no signal.
  • What is the warranty on the SMART HDMI Cable?
The SMART HDMI cable is covered by SMART's 1-year limited equipment warranty. Terms, conditions, and upgrade options vary by region, contact your reseller or visit smarttech.com/warranty for details.
  • What makes the SMART HDMI Cable better than other HDMI 2.1 cables on the market?
Several things set it apart. First, it is independently certified under the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Certification Program by HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA), a level of external audit and production quality that not all cables on the market uphold. Second, it is tested and certified by SMART specifically for use with SMART Board displays, giving you guaranteed compatibility and peace of mind that a third-party cable cannot provide. Third, at 10 metres, most cables cannot maintain full 48Gbps signal integrity. The SMART HDMI cable uses active optical technology to deliver certified HDMI 2.1 performance across the entire length without compromise. Finally, it is Plenum rated for permanent in-wall and in-ceiling installation, meeting National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements that most standard cables do not satisfy.
